Higher Elevation (2005)
What does Choong mean? Luckily, Scandal was on hand to clarify things. “Choong means anything of high quality, of high grade; we feel that's what our music represents but as more and more members joined in, we decided to call our group a family.”
The Choong Family consists of Afix, Scandal, HT and Nutz P, but unfortunately, due to other commitments from the group, only Scandal was able to come through. Nonetheless, he continued to explain how the Choong Family came up in the game and what they have planned. “Basically, we been grinding for about two years now, doing shows, recording tracks; we just finished doing an album.”
However, since coming up, the Choong Family have decided to do things independently without the support of a big label. Instead, they're now looking for distribution deals for their upcoming album. After getting rave reviews from their promotional single, ‘More Murking/Pain Don't Stop', the group decided to release a track from their upcoming album ‘Higher Elevation'. The double-A side single ‘Fall back/Memory Lane' was released in May, and received huge support from radio stations, most notably on London's Choice FM.
Talking about the forthcoming album, Scandal discussed about how the album is extremely versatile. “The album is different; there are different types of songs for different moods, because basically we write off our own experiences, like what we're doing, going through; we're like reality on beats. The album is like a full circle, something everyone can relate to.” Moving onto collaborations on the album, Scandal proceeded: “We got Street Dreams [Mike GLC] and Logan on a track called ‘Injury Time', we got Luke Skyz, TX Cam and Craze 24 also making appearances.”
Choong Family is all about hip hop. Even with the grime scene making a big impact on urban music, Choong Family remains true to their roots and don't plan to cross over anytime soon. “Nah, it's not really us. I appreciate it though, because they're making people stand up and take notice, but it's not really our thing!”
The foundation of Choong Family was started when Afix, Scandal, HT and Nutz P met at the University of Luton. Not content with just doing raves on campus, it was only after they graduated that they took it more seriously, booking studio sessions, pressing albums and shooting videos. It was pretty clear that music would be they're calling as Scandal clarifies. “Me personally, if I wasn't an artist, I'd just be writing songs for people. I could do that all day or maybe even go on to producing songs.” Continuing with the topic, I asked him what his biggest inspiration was when writing songs. “I'd say probably life as a whole, the things that you go through, different experiences, and the mistakes that you learn from. Basically what goes on in the world and what you see in the environment.” Whilst in the middle of doing a lot of promos and radio interviews, Scandal seldom gets any free time. However, when he does, he likes to do the same as everyone else. “I like chilling and relaxing, going out raving sometimes. You know, the standard things.”
It seems there's no shortage of hip hop artists in the UK urban scene, however this hasn't necessarily converted to good record sales in the pop charts. With the grime scene rapidly taking over, many believe that there's no market for UK hip hop and that it will stay an underground commodity. In spite of this, Scandal thinks otherwise. “I think that musically, the scene is improving and I think the market will get bigger. It's just that people in the industry have to start supporting it; we have to support our own and believe in our own music. If there's more labels and industry heads pushing UK hip hop in terms of promotion and advertising, there would be a bigger market.” I then put forward the question as to who Scandal thinks is the UK's finest in the hip hop scene. “Well, other than Choong Family, there are a few people doing their thing right now, like Klashnekoff, Swiss, Kano, Dizzee, Mike GLC and Logan.”
So what's in store for Choong Family in the future? After doing shows, pressing albums and breaking their music into the mainstream, what does Scandal and Choong Family hope to achieve in the long term? “Boy, basically I wanna be on top of the world! I want everybody to know who we are, where we're from and what we represent!” says Scandal emphatically. “I mean, who knows; when we start blowing up we might even go into the fashion business or even the drink business, we'll call it the ‘Choong Juice'.” It appears that Scandal is never short of ambitions and 2005 could be the year for Choong Family to finally take the urban scene by storm. With their upcoming album ‘Higher Elevation', Choong Family can look forward to another year of ‘more murking'.
