[Instrumental]
Cliff Nobles & Co.
I would love to someday interview Cliff Nobles to find out exactly how he felt when his instrumental "The Horse" zoomed up the charts in 1968.
"But why?" I hear you ask. "He must have been thrilled to have such a big hit."
Oh, I don't know. Read on:
Nobles was born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1944. From early on, he sang in the church choir. Before he moved to Philadelphia in 1965, Cliff was well-known in his hometown as a fine gospel singer. Within months of his move, Nobles was recording for Atlantic. He cut three singles, but they all bombed.
For the next two years, Nobles made audition tapes for a producer named Jimmy Rogers. In the company of Benny Williams (bass), Bobby Tucker (lead guitar), and Tommy Soul (drums), Cliff hooked up with producer Jesse James and Phil-L.A. Of Soul Records. Their second release for the label, "Love Is All Right," was a tight, soulful item fleshed out with brass sounds from future members of MFSB ("TSOP [The Sound Of Philadelphia]," 1974). On the flip side was the filler, "The Horse," which was nothing more than the instrumental bed of "Love Is All Right." Since Nobles did not play an instrument, he did not appear anywhere on "The Horse."
Unfortunately for the singer, a Florida disc jockey inadvertently played the wrong side of the single. Within a week, "The Horse" had sold 10,000 copies in Tampa alone! It eventually reached #2 on the national pop and R&B charts. But you really have to wonder just what Nobles did on stage during the promotional tours....
Whatever the case, Cliff Nobles & Co. made the lower rungs of the Hot 100 with two more instrumentals, "Horse Fever" and "Switch It On," before disappearing from the charts for good in 1969. "The Horse" continues to garner considerable FM oldies airplay.
