That was Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell This was written and recorded in 1955 as "Feuding Banjos" by Country star Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith. When the song became a hit, he had to file a lawsuit to get credit for writing it. A group called The Dillards popularized this in the mid '60s on the folk circuit. It was their version that author James Dickey heard and thought would fit nicely in the film version of his novel Deliverance. Not sure why they call it Dueling banjos. Grammy for best country instrumental in 1973. It's actually a guitar and a banjo. Eric Weissberg on the 5 string banjo, and Steve Mandell on the Guitar. Considered by aficionados to be one of the best five-string banjo players ever, Eric Weissberg is equally deft on guitar, pedal steel, mandolin, dobro and fiddle. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin and The Juilliard School and also a top NY studio musician, Eric has played for a variety of artists including Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson and John Denver. In 1967 he performed the world premiere of Earl Robinson's Concerto for Five-string Banjo, with Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Symphony. He had a number one single and album with "Dueling Banjos," the soundtrack from "Deliverance," which earned him two gold records and a Grammy. For the last four years he has been the featured guitarist with Art Garfunkel's ensemble, touring worldwide. Duelling Banjos, the theme tune from the film Deliverance, proved to be one of the unlikeliest hits of the '70s when it reached No 2 on the US pop charts in early 1973. The banjo and guitar which traded licks so memorably were played by session players Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell respectively, and these two gents taught the actors to mime the parts on film. The so-called film soundtrack album which was released was, in fact, an old LP entitled "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass" by Weissberg and Marshall Brickman. The guitarist on much of that album was future Byrd Clarence White. The hit single was the only tune on the album on which Steve Mandell played. The earlier album had included a tune entitled "End Of The Dream", which was very similar indeed to "Dueling Banjos", which was presumed to be a traditional tune, and was credited as such. Things got even more difficult when Arthur Smith, who had had a 1945 million seller with the famous "Guitar Boogie", pointed out that he had in fact written and recorded an almost identical tune, which he called "Feuding Banjos", in 1955. Normally the authorship of a bluegrass banjo tune wouldn't create much fuss, but Dueling Banjos sold in excess of a million copies.
