Born Jimmy Wisner, 8 December 1931, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Kokomo's "Asia Minor", which merged a melody from Greig's Piano Concerto In A Minor with a rock 'n' roll beat, was a pop sensation in 1961, hitting number 8 on the US pop chart. (In the UK, "Asia Minor" went to number 35.) Part of the record's appeal was that classically-trained Wisner purposefully used a cheap stand-up piano to give the record a honky-tonk flavour. He adopted the Kokomo pseudonym fearing that making a rock 'n' roll disc would tarnish his reputation as a well-respected jazz musician (ironically, his jazz friends liked the record). After graduating from Temple University as a psychology major in 1959, Wisner formed the Jimmy Wisner Trio with Chick Kenney (drums) and Ace Tsome (bass). With the trio he made two albums and as Kokomo he made an album and two further singles. "Asia Minor" launched Wisner's career in pop music as a composer of television and film scores and as a session musician, working with such artists as Freddy Cannon, Judy Collins, and Miriam Makeba.
