Wipe Out was written and recorded by The Surfaris in the desert of Cucamonga, CA in late 1962 when band members Bob Berryhill, Jim Fuller, Pat Connolly and Ron Wilson realized they needed a B-side for their upcoming single Surfer Joe. The band wrote the song in about 10 minutes, but decided they needed a gimic intro, so Berryhill's dad broke a plaster-soaked surfboard close to the mic and manager Dale Smallen added that now famous crazy laugh. They released the single and by July of 1963, Wipe Out had reached #2 on Billboard's Top 100. The Surfaris had become an instant, international hit.
